If you had asked me before the world cup, I would have told you a tie with Portugal was fine. If you had asked me after Portugal went up 1-0 in 5 minute, I would have told you a tie was fine. But if you asked me with the US up in the 94th minute, I would have told you a tie feels like a loss. It did look like the whole middle of the game Portugal took off not taking the US very seriously.
US controls their own destiny going into the last match to not just advance but win their group which I probably would not have believed was possible before the start of the world cup. I am sure Germany would not be interest in a gentleman's agreement for a 0-0 tie.
