D&D Chainmail Miniatures Game: Ettin

The Dungeon and Dragons Chainmail game was an underloved Miniatures skirmish game from Wizards of the Coast.  They expected it to be huge like Magic and when it did not perform it was slowly cut and cut with each Set getting less and less available.  First set was in every gaming store.  Second set some stores.  After that the final two sets seemed to be hard to find.  Now since it is like 15+ years out of print those late series models command prices quite a bit above their original ones.  I recently saw this on a store front for pretty close to the original price and half the price I see smaller models from the same Set listed on ebay so I picked it up.

The box was opened buy complete and in good condition including the card.  The model is not huge and seems smaller than the Orge Mercenary from the earlier sets.

He is quite expensive in game and very hard to manage but does get 4 melee attacks which make up for the not super great Attack value.

Castle Ravenloft: Escape the Tomb Mark II

Recently I discussed the idea of redoing the Castle Ravenloft game a little to try to make it a little better.  So here is the my first attempt for the first Adventure which is a solo, Escape the Tomb.  The premise of the adventure is that a solo hero wakes up at the base of Strahd's crypt and needs to escape the dungeon before dusk.  The original rules called for the escape tile to be placed 10 deep in the pile and that the timer for the approach of dawn was determined by the color of the arrows on the revealed tiles during the exploration phase.  A white arrows moved the time counter while the black just caused the annoying encounter cards.

To try to improve the adventure, I have built a dungeon and hidden the target tile in a group of 6.  I built a symmetric dungeon where all of the possible exit tiles are like 6 tiles away from the start.  I choose pretty basic monsters except for the garagolyes but then have card text that has them just sitting and waiting unless the adventurer gets close so a smart adventurer might be able to get by them without too much damage.  The sun timer is controlled by revealing possible exit tiles and a die roll every turn.

So for setup you need to find all the stuff in the book suggests.  You also need to draw out the cards for 2 rat swarms, 2 gargoyles, and 2 skeletons.  Place the Secret Stairway tile aside and set up the dungeon as above with the six monsters already on the tiles shown.  You will note the 6 upside down tiles.  After building the rest of the dungeon you need to take the secret stairway upside down and shuffle it in with 5 other tiles(3 black arrows and 2 white arrows) and place them as shown upside down.  These upside down tiles are the only one which are explored in the traditional way.  This includes placing a monster and and encounter for black arrows.  Encounter cards are never drawn in this adventure for not revealing a new tile in a turn.  On the turn you reveal one of these tiles move the sun marker 1 step.

At the start of each player turn roll a d6 and consult the table:

1-3 Nothing
4,5 Draw a Monster Card,  Roll the d6 Again and place the monster on that possible exit tile, revealed or not counting right to left.
6 Draw an Encounter Card and Move the Sun token.

Special Rules:
Moving Monsters: when monsters move to a tile without a specific placement required place them on the bone pile unless it is occupied.  If it is occupied place them next to the bone pile.

Moving the Hero:  The Hero cannot move out of a square that is next to a monster.

Chainmail Miniatures Game: Dwarf People's Guard

A couple of months back, I noted that I was looking for the stats for some of the wizards of the coast Chainmail line.   While I have yet to get anyone who has the stats I was looking for I did net one of the model boxes on ebay recently.  The dwarf people's guard set had two different models.  The sculpts are not bad but they are definitely on the planar side.

The models were actually pretty low cost for Set 4 and came with the special rule Shield Mate +2 which grants a +2 AC bonus from melee attacks to any friendly model in base to base contact with the People's Guard but any attacks directed at the friendly model can instead be directed at the people's guard.  Not bad little ability.

Redesigning Castle Ravenloft Boardgame

So my daughter saw me looking at stuff about the Mantic Dungeon Saga kickstarter and asked me about playing one of our D&D Coop games.  So I got them out of the storage area and picked the Castle Ravenloft to play with her on Sunday while the youngest was napping.  Now she is really not ready for a game like this so I "help" her as we go with choosing the best attack and keeping track of her treasures and monsters.  We made it through 2 adventures and provided a good reminder of the structure of the games.  These games have great value(Ravenloft on Amazon current 37 dollars shipped) in the components with like 40 minis in each and quality tiles with 5 heros who each have like 10 powers to choose like 4 or 5 for different slots so probably like 12-20 different combinations of powers for each character possible, but the structure of the game play really could use some work.  So I have been thinking about it.

D&D Basic Available for Download

Wizards of the Coast has been nice enough to put some of the D&D Basic rules up for download.  It looks to be essentially the player guide part and measures in at 110 pages.  From my quick glance through, it looks much more like a simplified 3rd edition than anything like 4th.  It seems like yesterday that we were determining THAC0's.  Oh well, I had some 4th stuff and never played so I will probably just read this download and file it away for the future.

Legend of Drizzt: D&D Boardgame

The Legend of Drizzt is the last of the series of 3 cooperative games that wizards of the coast released a few years ago.

The game is packaged the same way as the Ravenloft and Ashardalon ones with a tray to help sort the tiles and miniatures but bags are helpful to keep all the different counters organized.

Looking for D&D Chainmail Model Statistics

So summer is approaching and my first born is starting to get old enough for some training in the ways of the nerd.  I have been looking at my model collection and think I might start her with a little X-Wing and some Dungeons and Dragons Chainmail action.  Now X-Wing is star wars and she has seen and enjoyed the movies (especially the presence of a Princess) and Chainmail actually has a fair number of female sculpts that are presented in reasonable (not totally sexist) ways.
