Epic Squat Land Train

With all the Legion Imperialis Hotness going around, I got inspired to look at my old Epic stuff.  This then inspired me to look around for a few items that I did not have for my various armies.  While I had some Squat Land Train cars in a sealed blister, I lacked the base train so I found one for the collection.

Epic Scale Warlord Titan

This cover image really brings me back to my youth.  It was the cover of the first White Dwarf I ever had and was also used for the Rules Expansion for Epic Space Marine.

With Legions Imperialis filling up the feeds, I got inspired to look at my old collection and one item I lacked was a Classic Plastic titan.  Now these are not cheap anymore with the boxes going for hundreds of dollars.  This one was more than what was reasonable but it was pristine unpainted and almost the exact weapons.  It looks so new I wonder if someone is running these off on some home injection molding system.

Even the Void Shield disk looks good.

Four weapons were included.  Likely will look for some more ones in the future.

I did a quick push fit assembly and the weapons definitely like to fall off.  Arm also hangs very close to leg on this one.

Side view for completeness.

I also got a quick picture of the whole family together.  Mommy, Daddy, and two young ones assembled now.  Paint for me is always another issue especially when dealing with such old models.  It will be interesting to see how people feel about new verse old scale.

Epic Space Marine Infantry Boxes

So with the new release of Legions Imperialis, I was interested in looking at my old Epic stuff.  Lots of discussion about the value in the new range compared to the original so I decide to post pictures of the boxes I have to show the contents.

This box was released very soon after the Space Marine First edition box appeared as it is shown off in the back of my rulebook and Eldar and Orks are included in the Lore section for anyone who claims they do not belong in 30K.

The box has only 3 types of things in it.  Falcons, Guardians, and Flag poles.  These are very similar to what was in the original box where you used base colors to determine the type of infantry.

This Space Marine first edition box was for a new expanded range of Space Marine models from a new wave of plastics.  Lots more variety on the Sprue with these including bikes, speeders, and robots.

In the same wave as the last box these squats are similar with tons of options on the sprue.

For Space Marine 2nd edition the infantry boxes got smaller with half the same sprues but that might have made them more manageable junks of models to deal with.

A second edition Space Marine Eldar box.  This box has a lot of great stuff on it but is actually quite light on Guardians.

The Truth About D Weapons

So I cannot say if D weapons are ruining the game of 40K when they are allowed, but what I do know is that GW implemented these big weapons wrong and that is really the issue.

Epic Squat Colossus

Here we have a very old model,  an Epic Squat Colossus.  This is one of the Squat war engines as they do not have titans.  The price out a little less than two scout titans if I remember correctly.  The Colossus is made up of 11 parts with many cannons and missiles.  I have 2 of these but one is missing a few of the small side cannons.  I will need to either model this as battle damage or convert something for this spot.

Epic Eldar Warlock Titan

Today we are checking out the set for the Epic Eldar Warlock Titan.  This was part of the last batch of Epic stuff GW produced but as this kit is over 20 years old there are many floating out there on Ebay for bargain hunters with the time available to shop constantly for stuff.  The wonders of metal and plastic miniatures is that they pretty much last forever even with stored poorly.  Sure the paint might scratch and you can break it sometimes but most of the models made are still out there somewhere in someones garage or attic.

Epic Lucius Warlord Titan

Here we have one of the Big Boys in the Epic playground,  the Warlord Titan.  This one is Lucius pattern and matches the styles seem in the forgeworld Reaver and Warhounds that I have in my collection.  Add in the thunderbolt fighters for anti air and maybe some sentinels and you have a whole 3000 point Titan Legion list.

Epic Squat Overlord Airship

Back with another look at an Epic model.  This time from my Squat collection.  We have the overlord airship.  Normally I show all the parts but this one is assembled and not in need of stripping so it is staying together.  We can see this model is essentially an blimp/zeppelin with thrusters and some big cannons.  There are currently no official squat lists for Epic Armageddon but in one of the unofficial ones this ship used to have Anti Air abilities which was handy since Squats are very weak in anti air.  The major anti air unit is a non mechanized anti air gun which are really pricey on ebay.  You could probably sub a forgeworld anti air battery (stationary hydra) but those are OOP now also.

Epic Mark II Rhino Blister

Today we are looking at the modern Mk II Rhino blister for Epic.   This blister comes with 6 rhinos when complete which provides the rhinos for 2 tactical formations or 3 devastator formations.   Space Marines get Rhinos as part of their cost so you need about 1 of these packs per 1000 points in your core forces.

Epic: Eldar Revenant Titans

As part of the end of Specialist Games, I ordered a couple of things that I had noticed are harder to come by on the secondary markets.  Here we have the contents of the more recent Revenant Titans.  You get 2 bodies, 4 arms, 3 heads, and 3 Holofield Projector Fins.

Front and Back of the Body.

The three heads.  So 1 bonus head which can be used to dress up an objective or maybe a base for a different races titan.

The 3 fins.  Not sure if there is a specific match between the heads and the fins.

One pair of arms.  The two sets are the same and I have a hard time getting the right one to line up well with the model.

Classic Epic Eldar War Host Box

This box set is a pretty old one that I got still shrink wrapped.  It come with 5 sprues and square bases designed in the early 90's.  It is a repack of any earlier release that have 10 sprues.  This would be the MkII eldar sprue as the original one had just guardians and falcons in it.  This set contains more types of models than the current sprue.

You can see on the back of the box that 19 different models are part of the sprue.

Here it is.  Lots of different models but not many of each in the box.
Starting at the top left: Howling Banshee, Farseer, Banner, Artillery Crew, Dark Reaper, Autrauch, Wraithguard, Autrauch, Wraithguard.
Next Row: Guardian, Guardian, Jet Bike, Ranger, Guardian, Jet Bike, Ranger, Guardian with Heavy Weapon.
3rd Row: Jetbike, Guardian, Guardian, Support Weapon, Vyper, Heavy Weapon.
Bottom Row: Dire Avenger, Striking Scorpian, Swooping Hawk, Fire Dragon, Harlequin, Dire Avenger, Striking Scorpian, Swooping Hawk, Fire Dragon, Harlequin.

Closer views of the upper left corner.

Upper Right Corner

Lower Right Corner.  These are the useful models not found in the current product.  You get both the anti grav heavy weapon platform and the support weapon platform.  In the current rules, support weapons are added to gaurdian formations in groups of 3 so I have one set and 2 extra but I also have some metal ones.  The Heavy weapons replace gaurdians up to 3 per formation so those can be useful in any number but you probably want to do the full replace as guardians normally have no ranged attacks only firefight.

This section also has the Dire Avenger, Fire Dragon, and Harlies which are not in the current sprue.  Dire Avengers and Fire Dragons were up until recently sold as metals with enough models between(40 20 of each) to be 1 Aspect Formation.  I do not have those but I do have 3 different types of guardian models which might change into Aspect warriors with the proper paint colors.  Harlies are not in the current rules but might be used to represet an Extrach.

Epic Space Marine Battle Company Sprue

Recently picked up the Epic Space Marine Battle Company box to add some more assault marines to my epic forces.  My previous marine are from over 20 years ago so the contents of the box is different but some how the models that are there are exactly the same.  You get 4 identical sprues and the approprate number of long bases.  Here is the current sprue:

You get 24 Bolter Marines, 10 Assault Marines, and 6 Heavy weapon marines.  No sergeants, captains, terminators, or anything really interesting.  With the 4 sprues that makes 96 Bolters, 40 Assault Marines, and 24 Heavy Weapons.  The assault marines for up into 8 stands of 5 marines which forms 2 formations of 4 stands each.  Now the heavy and bolter marines have more flexability.  Now 1 heavy and 4 bolters on a stand would match the tactical stand description  and allow you to form 4 units of 6 stands but Epic is not as much WYSIWYG game as 40K.  Devastators have 2 heavys per stand so you can make 12 devastator stands for 3 formations of 4 stands then 2 formations of tactical squads that have no heavy weapon models but still get to have a heavy weapon in the rules.  This just makes it very clear what a tactical and devastator stand is.

For my beakies I used 1 heavy per devastator and none on tactical but I was try to stretch the heavies between 2 armies and now I have 24 more so I can add more if I want to.

Here is the close up of the 3 different models on the sprue.

Epic: Squat Warriors Box

Recently picked up this box on Ebay to bulk up squat infantry. Specifically I needed more Exo Armor and Hearthguard to get those to full units. I have also gotten some other assembled infantry but I have found that stripping and remounting this tiny plastic models is very tough.

This set is has 5 sprues in them and they were essentially all uncut which is pretty uncommon given how old this set is. This made them a little pricey though. This sprue was originally produced in a larger red box that had 10 in it instead of 5. That is the core of me force with this just used to fill in some formation issues. You can see a picture of the red box in this post.

Here is one side of the sprue. 3 normal bikes, 1 trike, 1 hearthguard exo armor bike, 1 mole mortar, 1 thudd gun in two parts, 1 exo armored hearthguard, 1 normal hearthguard, 5 Heavy Bolter, 1 Missile Lancher, 1 Gunner, 1 banner guy, 5 bezerkers, 9 normal squats.

Other side of the sprue where you can see the sides of the thudd gun.

Epic Eldar Warhost Box

Here is the contents of the current Games Workshop Epic Armageddon Eldar Warhost. You get 2 copies of the same sprue which they have to cut in half to get it into the small box.

First half frame shows 10 Rangers, 6 jetbikes, 2 Auturchs, 5 Wraithguards, 5 swooping hawks, 5 striking scorpions, 5 dark reapers, and 1 farseer.

Second Half frame: 2 Warlocks, 5 warp spiders, 35 guardians, and 5 howling banshees.

Assuming 5 models per base (which is not a requirement), you get 2 farseer stands (1 farseer and 2 warlocks), 14 guardian stands, 4 Ranger stands, 2 stands of 5 different aspect warriors, 6 stands of 2 jet bikes each and 2 stands of wraithguard. How you build up the force from these will depend on the list you are using since some use different units as warhosts and troupes.

Close up showing Wraithguards, Auturch, Ranger, and Jetbike.

Here we have Farseer, Dark Reaper, Ranger, Scorpians, and Swooping Hawks.

Close up of the howling banshee section of the sprue.

Warlocks, Warp Spiders, and Guardians.

You will not that this box does not come with any avengers or dragons. I am thinking about using my guardians from the Eldar legion as guardians and the guardians in this box as the avengers and dragons based on paint job to tell the difference. Currently GW makes those minis in metal and want 20 dollars for a total of 8 stands compared to the 30 stands here for 20 in plastic. These newer sprue are also missing many other things found on the Epic 40K versions like heavy weapons, vypers, harlies.

Epic Eldar Legion

Here we have some classic eldar box set for the Space Marine game and Epic Battles. This is a pretty old box of Epic stuff dating back to the late 80's so over 20 years old now.

Here we have some painting schemes like Eldritch Raiders, Sunblitz Brotherhood, Black Suns, and Void Watchers. The box came with 20 tanks and 200 warriors. None of these names seem to match up with any Eldar fluff still used as far as I have heard.

As you can see this models are all exactly the same as was the style in this first release of Epic scale models. Different units types were generally determined by base color. These guys would be guardians in the current game.

Here is the Epic Eldar Falcon Grav Tank. I might actually use these as wave serpents if I was building an eldar force since they look like the current epic models at little.
